Deux études sur la poésie bachique arabe : 1. Les précurseurs d'al-Hîra

Abstract : Title : Two Studies on Arabic Wine Poetry : 1. The Forerunners of al-Ḥīra

Abstract : This study has for goal to underline the noteworthy continuity of the vocabulary and style of Arabic wine poetry from the forerunners of the 6th century A.D. to the Bacchic classical poets, among whom Abū Nuwās is unquestionably the outstanding figure; and to emphasize the role played in the genesis of the genre by the poets who frequented the court of al-Ḥīra during the second half of the 6th century. It seems indeed, that it is in al-Ḥīra that Arabic wine poetry first developed, with such poets as ‘Adī b. Zayd and al-Aswad b. Ya‘fur and, before them, Ṭarafa, al-Musayyab and Muraqqiš al-Aṣġar. It is likely that all these are the poets who defined the traditional vocabulary, the images and the themes of wine verse, and inspired the following generations, starting with such poets of the 7th century as al-A‘šā et Ḥassān b. Ṯābit.
