Abstract : Studying the controversy which opposed geographers not only to sociologists who claimed Durkheim's legacy but also to a historian such as Lucien Febvre during the first two decades of the 20th century sheds light on the role played by fieldwork – as well as its polysemy as its complexity – in Vidal de La Blache's founding works which legitimize geography as an academic subject.
