In a landscape, the road network constitutes a strongly structuring element. Road axes that we know and take today, tarred, carefully maintained, juridically well protected, rigorously charted on all the scales (from the land register to the Michelin chart), incite to regard the roads as stable markers within the landscapes. In fact, observations made on finer scales tend to show that in the preindustrial societies the road did not have this today perenniality. Ground cord traced through the landscapes to connect distant places, the road is taken by foot, on animals back or by carriage. Because of this recurring use, the road is a line of wear in the landscape, its layout changing. Far from being immutable, the road, like the routes, fluctuates. At a local scale, the apprehension of road networks is all the more difficult as the axes of circulation are not necessarily marked out and permanent; seasonal or temporary rights of way are often met. The road ceases then to be a structuring marker of the landscape ; the materiality of the road tends to disappear, being nothing more than an inherent right to its socio-economic function. Through my work on the organization of the Beauce agricultural territories during the medieval and modern ages (XIIth-XVIIth centuries), I was brought to work on the organization of the openfield landscape, particularly on the distribution of the transportation routes on the agricultural territories. The fundamental question is : how does a peasant reach his own land inserted in strongly crumbled-up lot ? In order to answer, I have analyzed, within the small territory (a 1700 ha Beauce commune), the dynamics of the local road networks (in order to understand the access ways to the cultivated pieces of land) through the planimetric sources (current and old IGN charts, State Major, Cassini's, Napoleonean register, land plans of the XVIIth centurie and communal records concerning the public road), photographic sources (IGN missions), archaeological (headlands excavations) and textual ones (medieval and modern field books). Examining this documentation enabled me to note a dynamics going in the direction of a progressive degradation of the road network ; this kind of observation is observed everywhere. But what appeared to me clearly, it is that our current conception of the road network as a permanent public road unables the apprehension of the whole of the access ways to the lots (most of them enclaved, completely isolated from the road network) in the preindustrial age. In fact, my investigation led to bringing to light the use of a tightened meshing of headlands, almost disappeared nowadays because of the regroupings in the 1950' and the levelling caused by the powerful ploughing machines. These headlands, in addition to their landscape marker function, had in the old days an important function in the distribution of movements within the cultivated territory, allowing the peasants to reach their enclaved lots without passing on the neighbour lot when on harvest, or the access denied by their owner. The only vestiges of this network remain the roads and ways built on old headlands, thus dominating the fields, spared by the regroupings...
