Le Paléolithique moyen de la grotte Cioarei-Borosteni (commune de Pestisani, département de Gorj, Roumanie) : Etude préliminaire de l'industrie lithique, la question des Moustériens sub-carpathiques et de l'occupation des Carpathes

Abstract : The Middle Palaeolithic artefacts from Cioarei Cave in Borosteni (Romania). Preliminary study of the lithic industries. The Question of the Carpathian settlement. Middle Palaeolithic levels from Cioarei cave are dated from an interglacial and the last glacial. They are the oldest elements of the men occupation in Romania. The The archaeological units yielded a lot of bear bones and, less numerous, flakes in local raw materials (quartzite, metamorphic stones and quartz) The flaking method is similar on each kind of stones. Men looked for flakes with a back and with a long edge. The flake tools are rare. Somes cores are also present but did not give the flakes (other kind of stones). Men took with us their equipment after a selection outside the site, to do without doubt some specialised activities in the cave, in relation to the mountain context. Fragments of stalagmites are used to put ochre and they proved original settlements of these subcarpathic Mousterians.
