LE SITE PALÉOLITHIQUE MOYEN D'ÉRD (HONGRIE) : NOUVELLES DONNÉES SUR LES CHAÎNES OPÉRATOIRES ET RÉSULTATS MORPHO-FONCTIONNELS DE LA PRODUCTION

Abstract : The site of Érd has been excavated in 1963 and 1964 by V. Gábori-Csánk. It has yielded several human occupation levels in two small valleys with fi replaces and large mammal bone accumulations (Ursus spelaeus, Equus sp., Coelodonta antiquitatis, etc.). The high number of Ursus remains is the originality of this open-air site. The bio-stratigraphy and the radiometric data put the sequence inside the last interglacial and the beginning of the last glacial period.
The lithic assemblages are composed by artefacts coming from pebbles in quartzite, quartz, fl int and other stones. Silicifi ed wood is also present. The raw material origin is for the most local. The knapping method on the pebbles is standardised and gives thick fl akes, frequently with a cortical back described as "orange quarters". The characteristic of most of the fl akes is a long cutting edge, unilateral or peripheral. The proportion of fl ake tools is 25%, as side-scrapers or convergent tools. The assemblages have been described as "South-Eastern European Charentian".
A new study of the debitage methods shows the practice of several methods, more or less complex, with similar products (discoid cores, polyhedral cores, orthogonal cores, ...). The debitage on anvil also seems to have been used. We also tried to describe the functionnal needs of humans (types of fl akes, of cutting edges, value of the angles of the unretouched and retouched edges) to explain the high degree of standardisation of the industry.
