Línguas crioulas num contexto de globalização : o caboverdiano : uma língua mundial

Abstract : This article aims at showing the extent to which the genesis and present development of the Capeverdean language are linked to the phenomenon of globalization. First, it is argued, by means of lexical, morphological and semantic evidence, that Capeverdean Creole can rightly be considered an Afro-European language, i.e. the result of the encounter of the cultures of two continents. Second, a comprehensive account is given of the dynamics of modern Capeverdean Creole, in the Republic of Cape Verde as well as among the various communities of the Capeverdean diaspora, presently scattered across three continents (Africa, America and Europe). Lastly, stress is laid on the fact that the future and possible survival of this creole language will always depend on the relationship that Cape Verde is able to maintain with the rest of the world.
