Les Apontamentos de António de Paula Brito (1887) ou la naissance d'une tradition grammaticale capverdienne autochtone

Abstract : This article deals with the main characteristics of the Apontamentos ([Grammatical] notes), a Santiaguense Capeverdean Creole grammar published both in Capeverdean and Portuguese in 1887 by Capeverdean scholar António de Paula Brito. After a brief account of the work and its author, the paper insists on the linguistic features of the Capeverdean text of the grammar, which displays alternately archaisms and lusitanisms. The next part focuses on the scientific value of the Apontamentos, in which Capeverdean Creole is at the same time being described and used as a describing tool. Special emphasis is put on the Capeverdean metalanguage developed by the author as well as on the depth of his linguistic insight. Finally, the conclusion stresses the general significance of this pioneering grammar.
