Is it possible to observe the function of collective memory in a small group ? During an eighteen month study on urban memory in Oignies (Pas-de-Calais in the North of France), from 2002 to 2003, fifteen inhabitants have shared their experiences of and approaches to the town, with the help of three coordinators. Together, they have devised a means to merge their knowledge and their expectations, creating a cultural city using some of Oignies' existing buildings. The analysis of the map of the “city of the arts” allows an understanding of the identity chosen by the group by appealing, in its own way, to the past.

Est-il possible d'observer le recours à une mémoire collective dans un groupe restreint ? Dans le cadre d'une enquête sur la mémoire urbaine à Oignies (Pas-de-Calais), quinze habitants de l'agglomération, suivis par trois animateurs, ont durant 18 mois (de 2002 à 2003) mis en commun leurs expériences et leurs pratiques de la ville. Pour faire converger leurs connaissances et leurs attentes, ils ont imaginé ensemble la création d'une cité culturelle en réutilisant certains édifices présents à Oignies. L'analyse du plan de la « Cité des arts » fournit des éléments de compréhension de l'identité que se donne le groupe en mobilisant, à sa façon, le passé.
