The author takes a car trip across Canada, from Montreal to Vancouver, taking about ten days, and with one single question in mind: what is it that holds this vast country together? With only one old theory, the theory of regulation, to come to his aid, together with a few meagre observations gleaned from day to day on the trip, he works out a more or less credible reply concerning the relationship of a people to the wild state of nature. And this was how he arrived at the shore of the Pacific, which, it has to be admitted, does not constitute in itself a major scientific achievement

L'auteur traverse le Canada en voiture, de Montréal à Vancouver, en une dizaine de jours, animé d'une seule question: qu'est-ce qui fait tenir ce vaste pays ensemble? Avec pour tout secours une vieille théorie, la théorie de la régulation, et quelques maigres observations glanées jour après jour, il échafaude une réponse à peu près crédible à propos du rapport d'un peuple à la nature sauvage. C'est ainsi qu'il atteint le rivage du Pacifique, ce qui ne constitue pas en soi - il en convient bien - un résultat scientique majeur.
