Le monitoring de la forêt amazonienne par télédétection

Abstract : This paper examines the contribution of the satellite images and the aerial photographs for the characterization and the monitoring of the evolution of the agricultural clearings in the Amazonian forest. The reflexion presented here aims at proposing a strategy for the management and the follow-up of the Amazonian forest environment using remote sensing data. In this way, it appears essential to find out solutions making it possible to avoid constraints and difficulties which limit the use of satellite images of the wet tropical areas. We propose solutions based on the evaluation of the contribution and the limits of current systems of satellite images acquisition and processing. These solutions relate on the determination of an ideal window of optical images acquisition and on the fusion of images of different dates. We specify space and scale levels of monitoring according to images characteristics and to the extent of the phenomena to be managed. The wish to lead to an operational monitoring system calls complementary and specific methodological research given the nature and the rate of evolution of the phenomena which affect the Amazonian forest and constitute problems of regional planning and management of forest environment: agricultural clearings, gold washing, urban growth, etc.
