Gouverner par les honneurs. Distinctions honorifiques et économie politique dans l'Europe du début du XIXe siècle

Abstract : The author examines how honours were introduced into the realm of political economy as part of the genesis of a science of government ; how the traditional bienfaicts or kindnesses of the king were turned into a full-fledged governmental technique ; in short, how they became, under the name of competition, a method of incentive and classification of the public administrative agents in France, Great Britain and Italy. For the watchword soon became a commonplace : a science of merit held to pave the way for government by reward. The aim of this study is to grasp the conditions required for its invention and the degree of backing it received.
