Le rôle de la société civile dans la réconciliation franco-allemande

Abstract : Did the French and German civil societies follow their statesmen when they strove to "work" the memories after WWII? The youth exchange, subsidized by the Franco-German Youth Office for the last 40 years, is a good case-study to answer this question. Until recent times, this office curiously promoted an historical pedagogy of the intercultural meeting in contrast with what the pioneers of the rapprochement did in the 1950's. The reasons for this attitude are partly incidental and partly linked to the dynamics of the meeting of two different collective memories of the past. This hypothesis implies that the "work of memory" is not trouble-free at the interpersonal level, a fact that is not of no-consequence if one wants to export the Franco-German reconciliation model.
