Windowing the future. The cognitive operation of Windowing in the study of future time evocation.

Abstract : A model based on the operation of windowing is proposed to formalize three grammatical markers of future time evocation, will, be going to and be + V-ing. Each of these forms evokes a forthcoming event; this evocation may be analysed both as the location of a window, i.e. the location of a frame showing parts of the forthcoming event, and as the characterization of what is shown in the window, i.e. the characterization of a semantic structure. Windowing is a cognitive operation consisting for the speaker in showing different aspects of the events mentioned in his discourse, and in gapping others (cf. Talmy, Tomasello, Gosselin, Victorri). In the case of future time evocation, only portions of the forthcoming events are shown in this window simulated by language. Be going to evokes an underspecified semantic structure viewed in a window connected with the situation of uttering; be + V-ing evokes that only the initial part of the semantic structure is shown in a window connected with the situation of uttering; will evokes a rough (unspecified) semantic structure which is only suggested in a window disconnected from the situation of uttering.
