Retracer l'histoire du paysage dans la basse vallée de l'Argens (Var) : genèse d'un programme de recherches interdisciplinaire

Abstract : Closed to Fréjus, the lower Argens valley is a ria which alluvial progradation started around 6 000 years ago due to the slowing of the eustatic
rise of the Mediterranean and the increase of fluvial silting. While abundant archaeological data allow to retrace protohistorical and antique settlement
dynamics in this area, data are missing to reconstruct landscape evolution during the late Holocene. The location of the shoreline during the roman
period is of special interest considering the establishment of the roman colony of Forum Iulii, Fréjus, which harbour had an important commercial and
military role. In order to remedy to this lack of data, a Collective Research Program was laid out in 2003. Fundamentally interdisciplinary, the research
seek two main aims : the study of the morpho-sedimentary dynamics which modelled the lower Argens valley and the analysis of actual landscape in its
morphological (ancient landscape patterns) and human (settlement distribution, patterns and intensity) components. The following papers present the
first results of the program, which already call ancient hypothesis over the roman shoreline into question.
