Bouvard et Pécuchet et la littérature. Étude génétique et critique du chapitre 5 de Bouvard et Pécuchet de Gustave Flaubert. Thèse N.R.

Abstract : First viewing literature as a process, the genetic study of Flaubert's Bouvard et Pecuchet chapter V rests on a complete transcription and an annotation of its drafts. After being classified they enable to reconstitute the compositional phase of the chapter and characterize it as a dynamic programmatic writing process. Then literature is viewed as a product. It is an epistemological object which is not in special favour in the first part of the novel. As the other realms of encyclopedia, it is an illustration of the clash between knowledge and reality, according to the critical epistemology built up by Flaubert. On the other hand, literature gets a hegemonical position in the unfinished second part. That discrepancy may be even perceived in the treatment of literary knowledge. Indeed, like about the other branches of knowledge mentioned in the novel, the writer has collected an ample documentation. Discernible intertextual references can thus be studied in the genesis of that chapter, from first scenarios to the so-called final text. Making a distinction between three kinds of intertextuality allows to give a deeper definition to this notion and a new insight into the usual conception of Flaubert's realism. Literary knowledge gets finally its full meaning only when it is shown in a fiction so that literature becomes an «exposing» literature, in accordance with Flaubert's intention. For fiction sets the cognitive process in motion again by representing knowing subjects as grappling with knowledge. It underlines that the main feature of the characters is less their wants of knowing than their will of believing. This allows to wonder especially about their complex relationships with illusion. Eventually literature is invested with particular cognitive powers which, concerning some of them, authorize a new evaluation of the critical impact of Flaubert's irony featured as a «taking part irony». At last a critical genetic edition of the chapter is published.
