Does sonority have a phonetic basis? Comments on the chapter by Vaux.

Résumé

Bert Vaux has provided a very useful overview of the evidence for the syllable appendix, emphasizing the wide variety of phenomena that it helps to explain. While I agree with his analysis in most respects, I have suggested that the notion of sonority which underlies his syllabification algorithm is not phonetically undefinable, but may be rooted in the property of perceived resonance.
