La vision des grands-parents éducateurs au XIXe siècle : du repoussoir au modèle

Abstract : During the XIXth century there develops a complicated evolution in the role that grandparents play as educators of the young. Ideological differences play a large part in creating this complex picture. Though grandparents are regarded as the carriers of moral values and household knowledge, they are nevertheless kept at a distance in the development of their grandchildren. Grandparents are pivotal in the concept of the family circle protecting children. Yet the elderly are very often regarded as poor instructors of the young because of their tendency to spoil their grandchildren. Yet, contradictorily, this “shameful” spoiling of the young makes grandparents a model to follow for the most liberal and advanced thinkers in the second half of the XIXth century when the latter urged a greater respect for the psychological development of children.
