Poincaré, Langevin et Einstein

Résumé

Henri Poincaré (1854-1913), Paul Langevin (1871-1946) and Albert Einstein (1879-1955) have been interested in neighbouring problems of theoretical physics, of which they proposed different approaches, sometimes with converging results. After a reminder of their mutual relationships and knowledge of each others' works, notably about electrodynamics and the principle of relativity, we evoke the problems around which they met for the first time, on occasion of the first Solvay Meeting at the automn of 1911, i.e. those of tha nascent quantum physics, and we analyze their respective thoughts of this new domain. Then we come back to the question of electrodynamics and relativity, sketching a comparative examination of their understanding of it, that allows to put in evidence their personal «styles», related to their respective epistemologies.
From his works on the physics of electrons and his first conception of the theory of relativity, Langevin's approach to these problems could at first sight be considered as intermediate between those of Poincaré and of Einstein. One is actually led to suggest some influence of Langevin on a late Poincaré's approximation towards Einstein's point of view. The common themes of research or of concern of the three scientists allow to characterize three different attitudes with respect to the unity of phenomena and to the correlated means to unify physical theories. One can summarize these as : 1) an empirical diversity towards a formal unity around physical principles (Poincaré) ; 2) a unity of principle explored by physical principles and acomplished through the help of «theoretical models» (Langevin) ; and 3) a thought of the close connection of the theory with its object leading to a unification through the physical principles (Einstein).
