La réduplication : universaux iconiques et valeurs en système

Abstract : This article builds on data from various languages to bring out two dimensions of reduplication that are not reducible to each other: (i) iconic, universal components; (ii) a lexical and morphosyntactic dimension, which is more developed in some languages than in others: reduplication takes on specific, precise values within the grammar of a given language. One of the hypotheses put forward is that these two dimensions stand in inverse relationship to each other in a given language: the iconic, expressive backdrop of reduplication is all the more visible as the element at issue is less strongly integrated in the grammar of the language.
