Boulanger before Boulangism. A colonial Officer falled in Republic. Mathieu PROVIDENCE, Appointed in January 1886 to the French war office, general Boulanger is forced to quit the following year because of the "danger" he represents for the French Republic. This article seeks to demonstrate that this boulangist "threat" is less based on a change of behaviour on Boulanger's part than on an evolution of the way he is perceived. It is his colonial experience that makes Boulanger appear as "dangerous", since his action within the war office, together with the fame he derived from it, reflect the more general difficulty encountered by the political leaders in the process of converting officers to the republican values. This concern is reinforced by the particular circomstances of the beginning of the Third Republic characterised by a deep insecurity which increases the republicans's responsiveness to any risk of military coup d'etat.

Un officier colonial tombé en République, Nommé en janvier 1886 au ministère de la Guerre, le général Boulanger est démissionné l'année suivante au nom du danger qu'il fait courir à la République. Cet article entend montrer que cette " menace " boulangiste se construit moins sur la base d'un changement de comportement de l'officier que sur une évolution des perceptions à son égard. C'est son passé colonial qui rend Boulanger " dangereux ", car son action au ministère de la Guerre et les profits de notoriété qu'il en a retiré, font écho aux difficultés plus générales des dirigeants du régime à convertir les officiers supérieurs aux vertus de la République. Cette inquiétude est renforcée par la conjoncture particulière des débuts de la Troisième République, marqués par une forte incertitude, qui rend les républicains particulièrement sensibles à tout risque de coup d'état fondé sur l'armée.
