Comment on a écrit les nombres dans le sous- continent indien, histoires et enjeux

Abstract : This presentation exposes the debates which took place during the XIXth century and the beginning of the XXth century concerning the origin of the decimal place-value notation. It will focus on the echoes this debate had in the Indian sub-continent, in particular the exchanges G R Kaye and Saradakanta Ganguly had. These historiographic debates will be confronted to Sanskrit texts of the VIIth to XIIth century, which raise questions on the concept of position in the writing of numbers.
