La collection de tableaux et dessins français du XVIIIème siècle

Résumé

The collection of 18th Century French paintings and drawings acquired between 1859 and 1910, includes some of outstanding works by such well-known artists as Chardin, Boucher, La Tour, Fragonard, Greuze, Vigée-Lebrun and Prud'hon. The majority are genre paintings and portraits intended to accentuate the intimate atmosphere of the 18th Century rooms that the couple recreated and furnished. The drawings originating from the Chennevières collection and acquired by Nélie Jacquemart after her husband's death, compose a very fine set of works illustrating the style of the fêtes galantes artists, particularly drawings by Watteau, Lancret, and Pater, but also that of decorative artists and illustrators such as Gillot, Eisen or Freudenberg. There is no History painting, but is was the spirit of the Goncourt brothers and of what was then the innovative taste of art-lovers such as Laperlier, Marcillle, Delessert and Walferdin that guided Edouard André and Nélie Jacquemart in their contribution towards the rediscovery of an art of living.
