La représentation de la vieillesse dans les fragments 1,2 et 5 (éd. West) de Mimnerme et dans les poèmes homériques

Abstract : The aim of the present article is to bring to light, in fragments 1, 2 and 5, Mimnermus' way of building up, through constant references to the homeric poems, a representation of old age which is radically contrasting with the one given by them. Effectively, the elegiac poet, when compared with the homeric poems, not only chooses to give a totally negative description of old age and to depict old age as such, but mainly severs it from the heroic values which it is related to in epics : considering the pleasures of love as the one aim in human life, he makes of old age an insufferable evil as well as an inevitable occurrence, an early form of death, even worse than death itself. By so doing, he proposes, when compared with epics, a narrower focussing on the individual that old age reaches at his innermost being. The poet's view of old age is new, as well as deeply pessimistic and highly provocative.
