Les adjectifs intensifs

Abstract : The Intensifying Adjectives
After considering the status of intensifying adjectives among qualifying and classifying adjectives, I study the phrases made up with a Noun and an Adjective in intensifying use (such as dreadful heat, hudge desire). These phrases do not all offer the same semantic functioning.
By taking into account the character more or less direct of the intensification (big problem shows an intensification more direct than Herculean strength where the interpretative work needed is more important) and by looking for the explanation of the facts that I bring out among the general mechanisms of intensity, I point out which semantic features are recurrent (limit, fear, taboo...) and which inferences are at work (cause, consequence, comparison, enunciation). Thus, I reach a crossed parameter typology. Moreover I set down the hypothesis that the adjectives are more or less qualifying or intensifying.
I finally make a few observations on the morphology of these adjectives and on the downtoners
