This chapter introduces two concepts that are essential for the description of the grammar of a language: word classes and phrases. The first part of the chapter examines the classification of words into categories and highlights some problems that may arise. The second part of the chapter turns to the grouping of words into phrases, and examines in particular the constituency of what is referred to as the ‘verb phrase'

Ce chapitre introduit deux concepts essentiels à l'analyse grammaticale: les catégories des motes et les syntagmes. La classification des mots est abordée dans la première partie, où sont aussi soulevés certains problèmes de classification. Dans la deuxième partie est examinée le groupement des mots en syntagmes avec attention particulière pour la structure interne du syntagme verbal.
