Abstract : Main metropolitan regions are often described as key-elements a changing economy. In this paper, I intend on evaluating their influence on the French productive system's transformations. After assessing the necessity of a complementary functional analysis to enlarge the scope of mere activity sector-based studies, the economic profiles of French Metropolitan Areas (Aires Urbaines) are characterized.
From this, I show the intensity of changes: the well-known development of a service economy must not overshadow the increasing weight of both Collective functions and Immaterial Production (dematerialisation of the economy). In this context, main French metropolitan areas tend to be key-players of such transformations. Indeed, the existence of a specific metropolitan economic profile (explained by the sensitivity of some functions to demographic size) asks for further analysis. The study of their role in the productive system's transformations concludes on the metropolitan areas being the driving-forces of dematerialisation trends.
