Abstract : The obsidian recovered at Cheikh Hassan from the PPNA and early PPNB levels was analysed chemically. The original sources are diverse. The mode of knapping was identical to that used for flint at the site. This implies that the flint and the obsidian were worked by the same groups of knappers. Because of its status and its distant origins it must be seen as a precious material.
