Hiérarchiser des égaux. Les distinctions honorifiques sous la Révolution française

Abstract : The proclamation of equality brought about the abolition not only of privileges on the night of the 4th of August, but also of all the "feudal signs" on the 19th of June 1790. Badges of honor and the like were soon discredited. Nevertheless, marks of distinction did not altogether disappear during the French Revolution. "Absolute equality being the basis of the Constitution, rewards shoud be pondered so as not to injure it". This obligation was met through various procedures wich generalized a principle of honorific emulaton based on civic exemplarity.
