Les frontières nord de la Côte-d'Ivoire dans un contexte de crise.

Abstract : Abstract. - The current paper aims at pointing out the distinctive features of African borders. In this regard, we focus upon the borders in northern Côte-d'Ivoire. Strictly speaking, a border is a line dividing two territories or states. As such, it confers meaning and identity to a state. But in the case of Côte-d'Ivoire, the northern borders were shifted, relocated and then reduced; what in fact gave a different meaning to the sovereignty of the country. Yet, the borders inherited from the colonial administration supersede all the others. Despite the existence of some supranational borders and the consequence of the political crisis, they are more and more used by the populations for different kind of activities.
The border countries implement different monetary and economic policies which are now exploited by the population. As a consequence, legal trade and smuggling have become very dynamic in these cross-border regions. Combining all these factors together gives birth to atypical territories in the frontier zones.
