L'irrationalité du rapport de la diagonale et du côté d'un même carré dans les Questions de Blaise de Parme sur le Traité des rapports de Bradwardine

Abstract : Blasius of Parma's reading of the Tractatus proportionum of Thomas Bradwardine provides him with an opportunity to reflect on the incommensurability of the diagonal with the side of the square. This same ratio was mentioned by Bradwardine, in order to illustrate his definition of the denomination of irrationnal ratio. The question of the irrationalityof this ratio is also disputed by Nicolas Oresme in his Questions on Euclid's Geometry. On the one hand, we shall observe how Blasius of Parma and Nicolas Oresme treat this problem in the characteristic and strictly medieval framework of the questio. On the other hand, we shall examine the rôle the concept of the denomination of an irrational ratio plays and we shall reflect on the conception of irrationalité underlying these text.
