La nécropole du moulin à Mailhac (Aude)

Abstract : The Moulin necropolis, excavated between 1950 and 1974, has given us 367 funerary sets dated from the late Bronze age and the early Iron age. The archaeological contents, consisting of nearly 1000 vases and several hundreds of metal objects has enabled us to establish a simple realistic typology which has been used as a basis for a chronological sequencing of the 8th and 9th centuries BC. Thanks to this time-sequencing of the final Bronze IIIB and of the early Iron age stricto sensu, it is possible to define more accurately the evolution of the objects over more than two centuries and th highlight the changes which took place during the Bronze-Iron transition phase. The anthropological study bearing on 130 intact sets enables us to draw a first series of conclusions about cremation tombs and about the occupation and organisation of the necropolis. The study of the way the various body parts are represented and of the total weight of the deposited bones shows that this weight has changed throughout the previously defined chronological sequences. The incinerated bones can be considered as a potential cultural parameter. One chapter is devoted to the detailed analysis of funerary architectures and more widely to the general layout of the necropolis : location of the tombs, grouping, covering, signalling system ...
By comparing archaeographic and anthropological data we have been able to approach the social structure of the protohistoric community of Mailhac. The importance of the funerary deposits, the originality of the meat offerings and the geographical distribution of the groups point towards a division of the population into two groups. Besides, these two groups seem to be clearly located in some areas, whatever the chronological phase. In spite of this, we may conclude that what we have here is a society without a strong hierarchic organisation and without a really dominant group.
In this study, divided into two large parts, the scientific community will find the data gathered on the site and the ideas they have given rise to. Nearly 50 years after the publication of Le Premier Age du Fer languedocien, this first volume about the Moulin necropolis paves the way for new research on the large protohistoric cemeteries of Mailhac.
