Harmonic proportions and architectural proportions in the French theory of the 17th and 18th centuries

Philippe Vendrix

Résumé

Architecture and music were associated in René Ouvrard's "Architecture harmonique" (Paris, 1679). This work, inscribed in the neo-platonic lineage that Alberti had already resurrected in the 15th century, rests the problem of the analogies between the functioning of the two arts, by basing the analysis on proportions. The reasoning calls for the use of the rhetorical procedure known as epiphorism. By their similar use of proportions, architecture and music illustrate the divine harmony contained in all things. Taken up by Blondel in his "Cours d'architecture", this work enters right into the quarrel between the Ancients and the Moderns. Perrault will oppose the universal principle of proportions and thus Ouvrard
