Le tombeau en musique en France à l'époque baroque

Abstract : The musical tombeau was born in France towards 1639, and was extremely popular during the entire remainder of the Baroque era. It was used not only by lutenists, but also and just as often by harpsichordists, viol players, and guitarists. While certain characteristics are found in most examples (use of the allemande form, minor tonality, dense texture), it is not possible to generalize. This genre shares in the spirit of the vanitas tradition.
