Thématisation et focalisation dans les langues de Nouvelle-Calédonie: phénomènes discursifs et méchanismes évolutifs.

Abstract : Topicalisation and focalisation are analysed from two main viewpoints, as discourse and syntactic phenomena and as a source of linguistic evolution.
Such discourse processes are related to the hierarchical organisation of information, to determination, reference and assertion. As such, they are correlated with the construction of relative clauses, and are submitted to various constraints, particularly in interrogative and negative clauses. They have important consequences on linguistic evolution, triggering changes in word order and argument systems. Such issues are analysed in New Caledonian languages with some typological comparisons with other languages.
