La dynamique des interrelations politiques. Le cas du sultanat de Zinder (Niger)

Abstract : The question of the State's origins and development can be raised in new terms thanks to the theses worked out by N. Elias about the socio-genesis of the Western State. Far from being restricted to the West however, Elias's analysis can probably help us understand other types of state formations. An example is provided with the Zinder Sultanate in Niger. An analysis of personal relations at the court and the power game played out there can account for the Sultanates continual largescale expansion until the colonial powers put a stop to it. Comparing these two "dynamics" brings to light a constant whose degree of generality is yet to be tested but above all, it offers possibilities for understanding and explaining certain morphological differences between political systems.
