Le numérique au secours du papier : L'avenir de l'information scientifique des historiens à l'heure des réseaux (1999)

Abstract : The community of historians can no longer ignore the electronic publication, in order to comply with the new economic and scientific circumstances of publishing. Internet not only allows to relieve the classical publishing of the less profitable field of the historical research. This “ network of networks ”can also found a worldwide Republic of Humanities which still is nothing but a utopia. The electronic publishing should not be considered as a gimmick for the tabloid press as it possesses new advantages and is backed up by E-mail thanks to which the international scientific debate can develop. On the contrary it tends to become a major instrument which, when it is mastered, will dictate a new scientific geography in which the French were not the leaders at the beginning of 1999. After showing the advantages of Internet and answering its numerous detractors, this article will draw up the balance sheet of the historians' attendance on the Web and give a quick initiation to the network (navigation, lists, publication).
