La Corse exaltée ou le désir d’Orient. Récits et impressions de voyage dans l’œuvre de jeunesse de Gustave Flaubert (1835-1840)

Abstract : In the course of the last quarter of the XIXth century, to answer to the taste of Travel, many writers moved by their impressions of real or imaginary travelers, attempt to make fictionalized narratives and they try to testify their stays in distant lands, in particular in Corsica. Since 1838 and within two years, Mérimée, Balzac and even the young Flaubert come to travel Corsica and they throw on the paper "a little dust of their clothes ". Balzac goes "to the business affairs in the South ", as well as he tells it with impatience and enthuses in one of the fragments of correspondence sent to Mrs Hanska on March 26th, 1838. After twelve days spent in Ajaccio in the course of which he visits, without spirit, the "poor house" of the Bonaparte : indeed in the collective consciousness of his(her) contemporaries as in his, Corsica remains identified with the island where was born the Emperor. Balzac intends then to reach Sardinia. He hopes to make a fortune thanks to the exploitation of the mining deposits... Eight years after the publication of The Vendetta, piece of short stories classified among the " Scènes de la vie privée " of "La Comédie Humaine" and only inspired by its readings, the writer presents the island as a wild place, a desert in every sense of the word, which is not less admirably rich of latent promises. A kind of dormant paradise, within which the man would wake up and lose his native innocence, in the borders of the mythical representation of the Fortunate Islands or the voltairian El Dorado, is to be submitted to the civilizing strengths of the Progress.
