D'une densification subie à une densification collaborative? : Vécus comparés de la densification douce, Allemagne et France

Abstract : Soft densification takes place in suburban fabrics that are in transition due to operations conducted by inhabitants such as plot division, house division or built volume addition. This process of retrofitting suburbia is presently centred on the densifying inhabitants and the profit an individual can make from the process. The aim of this research is to focus on those who are not densifying but who could suffer from it. Beyond that, this research attempts to find a way to involve these passive neighbours in the densification process. We try to identify how the loss of quality of life (i.e., a deprivation) could be expressed in the neighbourhood discourse, in space and time, and in ineffable dimensions. In this sense, two neighbourhood case studies involving soft densifications that took place during the last decade, namely Vaulx-en-Velin (France) and Munich (Germany), are investigated in order to allow for a comparative study. The research project adopts a multi-method approach to understanding the experience of densification according to the material and functional consequences of that densification, as well as the legal and discursive construction of the densification process. Three distinct steps structure the research methodology. The first step involves reconstructing the frame in which the experience of densification is set. In the second step, we focus on the passive inhabitants’ experience and perception of densification. Semi-structured interviews are conducted regarding their experience and perception of densification, as well as the tactics developed by the neighbours to fit in with the changes to their environment. The third step consists of an experiment testing the visual density simulation tools that is intended to help involve the passive neighbours in the densification process.
