La Bahía de Montevideo: 150 años de modificación de un paisaje costero y subacuático.

Abstract : The bay of Montevideo is the sector of the Uruguayan shore having the most complex recent history. The present landscape and its current dynamic are the product of at least 150 years of antropic modifications. There is until today few knowledge about the modalities and impacts of these modifications, a fact that dificults the comprehension of some of the current environment mecanisms, particularly those related to sedimentation. The article draw a synthetic view about available historic documents about the current bay dynamic, and analyses the main moments of the transformation of the landscape. Most of the modifications occur between the 1870 and 1930 decades, by changes that can be evaluated thanks to cartographic and litterary documents. After 1930, the greatest transformations stopped, but the economic evolution of the country leads to landscape and environmental degradation. The available documents allow an evaluation of three phenomena that are fundamental for coastal management: contamination, subaquatic sedimentation, and the impact of storms such the one of 1923, the most powerful event of this nature registred on the bay during XXth century.
