Les lieux du cirque

Abstract : Since they became arts of ring, street arts and stage arts, around the eighties, the circus arts, itinerant or not, are spreading in various spaces, like industrial fields in fallow and national theatres. Although circus places are both places where people work, live, learn, remember and come together, they still remain unexplored by French anthropologists today. This book is born from a pluridisciplinary work shop organised by the Laboratoire d'anthropologie urbaine (CNRS) and the young Collectif de Chercheurs Cirque (CCCirque) at Ivry-sur-Seine in June 2006. We looked into four questions : institutional places, cultural and urbanistic development, courses around the world, and informal spaces. Finaly, our purpose is to make understand how circus is an artistic genre, a job, a leisure and a mirror for societies and times, but is also a factor for social life, by creating and transforming space and actually relationship.
