WANT

Abstract : This paper is about the modal implications of WANT. Semantically, WANT basically expresses that something is missing in a given situation (C. Delmas) along with a judgement of necessity (Franckel et Lebaud). From the absence of an element (an absence deemed detrimental) to the need for remediation, WANT implies an evaluative process. Evaluative judgement and evaluation of necessity are modal judgements whose source can be within the utterance (internal dependencey) or without (external dependency). This paper is also a study of the translation of WANT from English into French.
