QUAND L'HYPERLOGICISME PERD LE SENS : RETOUR SUR L'ANALYSE LINGUISTIQUE DES ÉNONCÉS ORDINAIRES À PARAPHRASE MÉTONYMIQUE DE NUNBERG À LANGACKER ET À KLEIBER. PRÉSENTATION, DISCUSSION ET CONTRE-ANALYSES

Abstract : This paper deals with about thirty ordinary utterances that some first-rate linguists, since the 70s, have considered to contain a kind of logical anomaly and that they tried to explain by mean of brand new mechanisms and principles, such as pragmatic functions, appropriate arguments, facets, logical polysemy, active zones, "métonymie intégrée" (in addition to usual treatments in terms of figures of speech, figurative meaning or classical lexical polysemy). They all justified their analyses by relating these utterances to semantically equivalent or almost equivalent ones, that, in terms of linguistic form, only differ from the former by the extension of an argument, being understood that the modified argument is "métonymically" or "synecdochically" bound with the initial one (eg Paul is tanned. → Paul's skin is tanned. ; I'm in the phone book. → My name is in the phone book.). I firstly characterise as precisely as possible the relationships between the utterances of both series before methodically presenting the various treatments of those of the first kind. Then, I discuss these approaches from both a technical and a theoretical point of view, highlighting the wrong representationnist and hyperlogicist assumptions I argue they are based on. Lastly, I 1 Que soit ici remerciée l'association CLÉLIA qui m'a offert l'occasion de synthétiser et de présenter dans les conditions les plus favorables les résultats d'un vaste chantier. The issue is to show that numerous semantic puzzles originate from preconceptions about meaning and that an in depth-analysis of linguistic units is generally able to solve them.
