Une transition mobilitaire dans les trajectoires de vie ? Exploration spatio-temporelle du couple lieu de naissance/lieu de décès en France métropolitaine (1970-2020)

Abstract : The opening of the national register of deaths in France (1970-2019) gives access to over 24 million individual life trajectories through the information on place of birth and place of death (dates and municipalities). We postulate that access to these exhaustive disaggregated data is an important opportunity to deepen the study of mobility behaviours in France over the long 20th century and to test the hypothesis of a “mobility transition”. In particular, we show that there has been a general increase in the distance between place of birth and place of death, shaped as a generational transition between an old regime of local life trajectories and a new regime of extensive life trajectories, which affects individuals differently according to their gender, age at death and geographic origin. Beyond the evolution of the medicalisation of the end of life, our first results tend to confirm the growing role of residential mobility in the transformations of settlement structures.
