Charles Doe and the publication of John Bunyan's folio (1692)
Résumé
This note argues that Charles Doe, best known as John Bunyan's friend and first biographer, might have been a more controversial figure than is usually assumed. By examining previously ignored archival sources from the period, it is possible to trace Charles Doe in various Baptist congregations around London, and unravel his role as an opponent of the singing of hymns imposed by Benjamin Keach in his Horseleydown congregation.
