This article deals with the creation in 1895 of the Society of Americanists, the first one of its kind, and gives some reference points to understand its history. In the first part, it refers to the conditions of its creation by Ernest-Thédore Hamy and its development under his guidance. In the second part, it discusses Paul Rivet's strong commitment in the destiny of the Society and shows how he decidedly helped to expand its international influence. As an international leader of French Americanism during the first half of the twentieth century, he boosted its Journal that was worldwide unequalled for several decades. In the third part, this essay sketches out the main geographical, disciplinary and subject trends of the articles published in the Journal.

Cet article revient sur la création en 1895 de la Société des Américanistes, la première de son genre, et pose quelques jalons de son histoire. La première partie évoque les conditions de sa création par Ernest-Théodore Hamy et son développement sous sa direction (1895-1908). La deuxième partie s'étend plus longuement sur le fort engagement de Paul Rivet, figure de proue de l'américanisme français pendant la première moitié du XXe siècle, dans la destinée de la Société et montre comment il œuvra de manière déterminante à son rayonnement international, en donnant un nouvel élan au Journal de la Société des Américanistes qui n'eut pas son équivalent dans le monde pendant plusieurs décennies. Enfin, la troisième partie dresse un tableau synthétique des orientations géographiques, disciplinaires et thématiques constitutives de l'américanisme telles qu'il se donne à lire dans les pages du Journal.
