Introduction : "As about a century has elapsed since Sir Richard Hoare laid the foundations of archaeology in this country by the systemic excavation of ancient tumuli in Wilts, and as in that space of time a considerable body of prehistoric pottery has accumulated in our museums, the time has arrived when some attemps should be made to arrange this early ceramic in approximately chronological order [...]"
