The Political and Religious Dynamics of the Mawlid al-nabawi in Mandatory Palestine

The Arab community in Palestine asserted itself over the years of the British mandate through the promotion of various national symbols. Such a national symbol was the festival of the birth of Prophet Muhammad (al-Mawlid al-Nabawi), which nationalists wanted to turn into a Bastille-day-like occasion. Yet its denominational content, and geographical factors limited the success of this project. Yet the history of the Mawlid over the Mandate years reveals many of the dynamics, ups and downs of Palestinian national mobilization during the period.
La communauté arabe de Palestinienne a, durant les années du mandat britannique, cherché à s'affirmer à travers la promotion de divers symboles nationaux. L'un d'eux était la fête de l'anniversaire du prophète Muhammad (al-Mawlid al-Nabawi). Pour certains nationalistes, il était utile de faire de cette occasion une fête nationale au sens fort, un équivalent du Quatorze Juillet. Cependant, en raison de sa nature confessionnelle et de facteurs géographiques, le succès de cette entreprise fut limité. Cependant, l'histoire du Mawlid est un marqueur très révélateur des dynamiques, des hauts et des bas de la mobilisation nationale palestinienne durant cette période.
