Les développements historiques de l'Afrique de l'Est sont éclairés par les cycles du système-monde afro-eurasien qui s'est constitué au début de l'ère chrétienne, système où l'océan Indien occupe une place centrale. C'est dans ce cadre que l'on peut saisir le développement de la culture swahili et de ses cités-Etats, et celui des îles Comores et Madagascar.
