This paper aims at checking the relevance of the notion of salience in relation with the grammar of natural languages. We first show how this notion can be implemented in order 1) to account for the animacy hierarchy (Silverstein 1976), which explains certain variations in the coding of subjects or subjects in Hindi or Armenian, 2) to account for the selection of the antecedent of a reflexive or an emphatic in a context of multiple 'accessible subjects', 3) to describe the operation which is involved in the focalization of either one segment of the statement or of the whole statement, particularly when the whole statement can be considered as a non segmentable comment with no topic and mirative meaning (Hindi aorist/Armenian evidential). In this way we argue, on the basis of Hindi and Armenian data, for the relevance of the notion of salience in accounting for such phenomena which remain outside the grasp of cognitive or referential interpretations. We show that salience, manifested by constructions or markers semantically, -syntactically, or pragmatically constrained, is indeed a core notion in grammar.
