Sémiologie de la symbolique romane - problématisation à partir de l'exemple de Vézelay

On the ground of a study on a capital and the central tympanum of the basilica in Vézelay, France, we wish to contribute here to the semiological analysis of symbol such as it existed in the Romanesque art, and of its implications for the process of representation in a cultural context based on symbol. We shall draw attention to technical aspects of signification, in so far as they testify of structures and presuppositions in the representation, as well as to the Weltanschauung, to the underlying cognitive process, and to what it says of ways and contents of thought in the Romanesque times.

A partir d'un chapiteau et du tympan central de la basilique Sainte Marie-Madeleine, à Vézelay, nous souhaitons contribuer ici à l'analyse sémiologique du symbole tel qu'il existe dans l'art roman, et de ses implications pour le fonctionnement de la représentation dans un contexte culturel fondé sur le symbole. Nous nous attacherons à la fois à des aspects techniques de la signification, comme révélateurs de structures et de présuppositions dans la représentation, et dans un second temps au rapport au monde, au fonctionnement cognitif afférent, et à ce qu'il explique des modes et des contenus de pensée à l'époque romane.
